What in the world ... is a Hoodoo?

at the last minute I again have a review completed and my "month" Should meet;) This time it's something less dangerous, but for RPG culturally usable, I think. This also shows the influence that the inanimate nature on people's lives. Even outside of major natural disasters. I would always like to use as hundreds of pictures, but I lack the space and permission is therefore by its own image search with the given key words is recommended. It's worth it.

What in the world ... is a series of articles in the unusual natural phenomena that are related to Spice up your can use role-playing game worlds and campaigns are briefly explained. And especially if it is fantasy worlds. Of course you can also simply read Sun The other contributions can be found in the menu under "What in the world ..."

What is a Hodoo?

No, Hoodoo is not related to the African religion of Voodoo, let alone with the African-American religious hoodoo, but describes a fascinating rock formation that inspires even the idea of creative energy as Hoodoo, Balance Rock, or Fairy Chimneys (Fairy Chimney) refers to a voluminous rock column, the tip of a massive, optically remote rock for as a hat. The hat is made in some cases, high color contrast on the column and emphasizes the appearance of a huge stone mushrooms. The height can vary between a man's height and a multistory house. Centimeters large hoodoos can be from a pure development mechanism lane even as such, but it is not customary to call it that.

Hoodoos are signs of erosion, which may under certain, but not so rare conditions arise. They can occur in groups of hundreds of columns. And as fascinating as the question is how a cone-shaped rock on top of a rock column go, a question, explain the many peoples in their legends with the work of giants and mythical creatures, so simple is the answer.

Known hoodoos are found in K appadokien, Turkey, Djavolja Varos in Serbia or in the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument in Utah .

How does a Hoodoo?

(not Simulationisten can also skip)

hoodoos are found at the appropriate rocks and in the appropriate climate and rarely occur alone. They are formed mainly in arid and sub-arid climate, ie an environment in which evaporation exceeds precipitation in most of the months. On special bedrock caused by so-called Badlands.

These landscapes are characterized by very dry, steep ridges, ravines and little vegetation. The latter is of crucial importance, since the rocks without vegetation increased wind and water erosion are exposed. Strong sunlight can accelerate Gesteinsverwitterng. A great altitude on the plateau also favors the forces of erosion.

comes in these dry regions periodically to very heavy rainfall, during which large amounts of loose and be removed not by plant fixing materials and wash out the deep gullies that are responsible for the rugged landscape (this way, the Grand Canyon was created). Whether a ravine or eg a Hoodoo arises, decide on the rocks. Large, small-scale differences in the erosion resistance promote these more obscure formations.

They typically occur where different effusive (ie volcanic rocks) are superimposed deposited. You should know that most volcanic eruptions are characterized by a change of outbreak behavior. It may alternate quickly loose pyroclastic volcanic rock and fluid (that lava) to form the characteristic layering. In Hoodoo it is often proposed as a good low to be detected fringe pattern.

From the results in a loose ejections tuff, lava, however massive, resistant basalt. Some tuffs are consolidated so porous and weak that they can crush them with bare hands. As a result of tension, shattering and other stresses cause cracks in the basalt, can penetrate through the water, so the loose Tuff including washes away. To chance is then to decide whether some are in certain places and under such basalt boulders remain in the tuff like an umbrella to protect from erosion, creating an isolated column.

The protective basalt is replaced here by meteoric waters often the hat-like conical shape, while aeolian erosion rounds off the column. As a protective cap, other resistant rocks such as volcanic ignimbrite (solidified ash flows) are used. The cover can also consist of a single harder volcanic rock (called a bomb or block)

use role-play

From Hoodoos is based on little danger, it Unless you are among the unfortunate who are in a very rare rock fall or next to it to climb, so I do not use a description of the dangers. In the role play they still give her a lot, not only because they support as a phenomenon even to the wonderful character of a fantasy world, but because of Man knew early on to make it to advantage. Therefore, following is a brief description of a suitable place to role play.

Tuff shall be handled easily expressed and to bring in almost any desired shape. The result was eg in Cappadocia, a mountainous plateau in Turkey, the late Byzantine Matiana, today Göreme, a city that was in the 10-20 meter diameter pillars chiseled and many floors deep.

are based on the city volcanic eruptions that began in the Miocene (before 10Mio.J.). As early as the Hittite period, the region was populated and there is evidence that has already been a settlement around 8000 BC. In the artificial caves rule consistently cool temperatures, so that as storerooms Keller and serve. The corridors are often interconnected and can be very complex.

The shafts to lead down into the groundwater, thus ensuring a secure water supply. The caves were used as well as religious facilities such as burial grounds. As one of the most important early Christian centers, there are many murals, basilicas, churches and chapels in the caverns.

incurred in the winding tunnels many rooms and secret hiding places , so that the city could also be used as a refuge. Already constructed in the Byzantine period Christian groups narrow shafts up to high areas under the stony hills, where they could hide. In the absence of a declaration at a later, Turkish time arised the myth of the fairy chimneys. The advantages of the city affords its national importance, so that it developed into a colorful, cultural melting pot. In the surrounding area sculpted over 50 such underground cave cities, as an example of the easier life of the people affected.

How To Send Out Save The Date For Birthday Party

Action: Read an RPG in the public

Just before we go there again, I would like the funny action "read a role-play in public" have mentioned, as the initiator of the page The Escapist, which has declared the action you want from many blogs.

The purpose of this campaign, by reading RPG books, the public, except to make the bus, train or on the curb on our hobby attention. This, of course, no loud talk is meant, even though it would certainly give the matter vigorously. It refers to 3 weeks a year take place at important historical days. The day after tomorrow, it's that time again.

has kindly Clayton is Jed, active inter alia in Tanelornforum translate that effort made the call in our beautiful language. The translation was then promptly set at The Escapist. All information may be found here

the associated (as always confused chaotic) Facebook page you will find here

It's not really complicated and with enough participants, it might make one or two outsiders curious. I also run a fun bet that I will not see anyone at the time a RSP book in hand, so you ran think;)

Should I Still Claim 0 While Married

What's wrong with the House rules hostility?

blows recently to meet me from all sides, an aversion to house rules and rule modifications, be it in forums or in their lap and ever I see myself compelled to justify myself.
blame I can not, because earlier I was thinking Sun

A role-playing kindly you have to play "by the book", that is, you follow the rules word for word. That had not happened critical, one was aware of the weaknesses of certain rules quite deliberately, but change something? No, absolutely not! And if a rule was missing? Well, if in doubt they changed just the role-play to a system with more rules, covering the gaps, and follow that one could (in my opinion, were able to even the heavy control systems such as DSA4 occurring in the first, but that's just my opinion). But when you brought your own ideas, made the system is no more fun, most of the players that these ideas had not.

in forums to read then equivalent to that system A or B is not "real" if you change this or that, or that you should just get used to the idiosyncrasies. If in doubt, you should simply take a different system that can handle certain claims (for other claims not turn). So much so that users are not willing to discuss with you when you do not play the "real" system.

And the more I dealt with role-playing I was at some point, but later than necessary, clear the authors are 90% of the regulations no game designer, but role players like you and me. They are no more or less qualified to bring out a control system. Some authors are so bold that they bring out basically just their own, arbitrary house rules collection as a book and call the role playing game.

Where does now afraid to put under a bushel of these people? I think it is the comparability. One can easily replace when you can just say you have class X with Y's ability to level Z. The Internet is more important than ever. Second, always hovering around the fear that one finds no other players or rounds, if you do not play the "real" system. And thirdly area thinking it is, how can someone (Eg a fellow player) released into doktorn of the preferred system, as if he could do better than yourself No, before it is conceded that a house rule would be a good idea, it is rather the written word, this is the easiest deal.
And it is becoming not only the lowest common denominator. A solid control system is basically just a buffer or referee against disunity.

I am released from this bondage mania under the freedom to role play. It helped me believe in the philosophy of easy rules. Ironically, the games are ältesteten role at all in this category. It's partly a question with as few rules as possible problems creatively verregeln and sometimes spontaneously and on the other hand, the call to adapt rules to their own, individual needs of a game round.

Today I play the more house rules or without modifications, even my very favorite role playing virtually no system. I have no qualms tear out all the modules of systems or remodel, and listen for it to allegations of fanatical perfectionism. But not a role-playing is just perfect and no role-playing can serve the unique demands of a role-play round. It is just a little originality to this simple problem to solve. I can do this because I, as a fixed-duration game manager make available to the condition that I have control over the rules that I use. Basically I'm just what role-players have made already two to three decades before its rule sets at some point and wrote down other have provided.

What Does The Freshwater Sunfish Eat

What in the world .... a Blue Hole?

Better late than never. Actually, I do not have time to write long blog posts, and I announced some time ago to try to keep it shorter. We'll see if I succeed this time.

In my last entry, there was the misconception that this is the first article in the What in the world ... Series would be. In fact, there are the five. You can find them if her right in the categories of "What in the world ..." clicked. =====>

I still have problems with the line spacing, the blog software seems to randomly pick out one line or 1.5 lines. If anyone has a solution for it, I am pleased with a comment.

Blue Holes

space: [up to many tens km long cave system]
Occurrence: In regions with coastal carbonate
potential danger:
[less dangerous]
time scale: [Recent]
What is a Blue Hole?

Today it is blue. Very blue. I translated the term do not realize, because it is a kind of technical term. A Blue Hole is one of those phenomena that can be endlessly fascinated stare long enough to ask, how does something like that, and forgetting the time. The solution is relatively simple if one thinks in long periods of time.

(aerial view of the Great Blue Hole in Belize)

The Blue Hole is a special case of a depression in the limestone, known as a sinkhole, and that it is a surface water or groundwater flooded cave system . The circular entrance belies the fact that such a branched, may be located several miles long cave system. A blue hole may extend over 100 feet straight down, so that the dark blue color of the water next to the flat archipelagos particularly stand out.

The term Blue Hole is not used consistently. One can be divided roughly into the category of Ocean Blue Hole and Inland Blue Hole, while, as the name suggests, an Ocean Blue Hole is primarily with sea water at the coast and a national Blue with fresh water (surface water or ground water) filled. Inland Blue Holes are also known as cenotes. There are many other classifications that we can not but have to go through. There are no unique symptoms and there are thousands of cenotes and blue holes in the world known to be connected with the highest in the Caribbean and Central America.

The largest and most blue holes are found in the Bahamas and Belize. The deepest blue hole in the world with over 300m depth is the Zacaton in Mexico.

ensteht Like a Blue Hole?

(not Simulationisten can also skip)

The process of creation of Blue Holes is where tens of thousands of years in the past, the foundation years, however, up to several hundred million. Favorable conditions for the formation can be found on carbonate platforms. This is a sedimentary body deposited in shallow water limestone in thin layers. The limestone is formed by the Metaboslismus from microbes or from the skeletons of sessile (fixed) organisms such as corals. While you can find the Blue Hole in every climate zone in theory, the only form in warm waters Riffplattformen (Which limits the occurrence of the Blue Holes by movement of the tectonic plates of course). The platform is qausi a solid, solid plate.

Over the last ice ages, the last Eismaximum was 20,000 years ago, the sea level dropped by up to 130 meters. This means that some of the old Riffplattformen were dry. Particularly old structures are due to stresses crossed by cracks in the surface water can penetrate and dissolve the limestone, causing formation of karst caves. The actual, prominent hole that one finds today, may arise if such a cave roof collapsed.

During the late glacial period the sea level rose again and filled the cave systems. Equivalent of this happened with groundwater fluctuations on the mainland.

properties (and dangers) of the Blue Holes

blue holes and cenotes are a paradise for divers. The cave structure ranges from simple systems, such as the Guardian of the Blue Holes on Andros in the Bahamas, Iceland to highly complex branched systems.

are the famous cenotes of Mexico state of Quintana Roo and Yucatan. There are found in the 1000 cenotes of a few tens of meters to a few hundred meters depth, and probably the largest underwater cave systems in the world, the Ox Bel Ha and the Sac Actun with about 180km in length.

flow These underground river systems such as all the rivers toward the ocean surface with numerous entrances and are connected, which not all are explored, as they are in the jungles of Central America is difficult to locate and only a few meters can be great.

Since the conditions usually anoxic, thus in oxygen, are and can penetrate also little light in the caves, there are less ways of life, as in the light flooded shallow water. They work but only at first glance dead Besides micro-organisms or cancers can be found in fact even large creatures such as manatees, sea cows, in the Mexican cave systems that live in shallow water and the rivers of Central America and by previously unknown access from the coast into the underwater caves penetrate.

(a Manatee, here on the coast. Through underwater entrances they can penetrate into the cave systems)

In Blue Holes can land fossils from the era can be found before the flooding, most recently in 2007 a 1000-4000 year old country crocodile Iceland on Abaco in the Bahamas.

Blue Holes are safe as long as one goes into it not in it. The easiest way to get in the cave system of a Blue Holes in difficulty, to get lost easily. You have to remember is that the cave network extending in all directions and the water offers the possibility to move freely up and down. For this reason, divers carry a lead rope with you. Not infrequently there is a separation layer between sweet and salty sea water including ground water, which acts as a second water surface at the light breaks, so that divers can easily lose sight of.

(unreal dive in the caves of Ox Bel Ha, source: D. Riordan)

Another danger are strong currents, especially in the küstennahnen Blue Holes, which are exposed to the tides. Through the turmoil, even small boats can be pulled down. Due to the very different length of the cave passages can also achieve even weak currents in narrow passages of a high pressure so that it can happen that one in. Although in an opening, but not to swim back.

use role-play

I have to role players who require no Explain how to use caves, so only a few and suggestions.

were in the absence of natural explanations for the cenotes of the Maya in Yucatan the entrance to the underworld. Who sacrificed the circular abyss treasures including gold objects, and others. Human sacrifices are also shown. Last but not least, the Maya settled in the vicinity of the cenotes, as they were in the dry season the only water supply.

indicated the Bahamian natives (and apparently still do) the Blue Hole as a "blow holes" caused by the monster Lusca, a mythical creature half octopus, half shark, which is probably due to the giant squid finds stranded declining. The "breathing" of the monster, which is perceived in the Blue Hole can be explained by tides, currents and water level fluctuations, as well as a whirlpool-like bubbles in these cave entrances. However, there is a through ball for a cthulhoiden myth.

last noted was a very useful playing aid, a collection recorded under water river systems, which was partly linked above already.
